Develop the Managers Your Organisation Cannot Afford to Be Without
Research-led commercial leadership and management training for employers across Yorkshire and the North West, designed around the real challenges managers face when leading people, improving performance and responding to change.
Government-funded new starts on the major leadership and management apprenticeship routes have now stopped. The need to develop capable supervisors, managers and senior leaders has not.
Qualia Academy's commercial pathway gives employers a focused alternative: develop the capability the manager actually needs, apply it directly to the workplace and invest in leadership knowledge that remains inside the organisation.
Government-Funded Leadership & Management Apprenticeship Starts Have Now Stopped
From 1 September 2026, government funding ended for new starts on three of the principal leadership and management apprenticeship standards: Team Leader Level 3, Operations Manager Level 5 and Chartered Manager Degree Level 6.
The funding route has stopped. The management challenges have not.
Businesses are still promoting supervisors, appointing managers, restructuring teams, addressing performance, introducing new technology and asking leaders to deliver organisational change.
Waiting for another funded route does not remove the capability gap. It risks leaving managers dealing with increasingly complex responsibilities without the development required to lead them well.
Employers that act now can continue building leadership capability rather than allowing the withdrawal of funding to create a leadership-development gap within their organisation.
Team Leader Level 3
New government-funded starts have ended, creating an immediate need for alternative development for supervisors and first-line managers.
Operations Manager Level 5
Employers can no longer rely on government funding for new starts when developing established operational managers.
Chartered Manager Degree Level 6
Government funding for new starts has also been withdrawn from this established management-development pathway.
Train the Manager While Improving How They Actually Manage
Leadership training becomes considerably more valuable when the manager can connect what they are learning to the people, performance and situations they are already responsible for.
Rather than relying only on fictional case studies, managers can examine their own communication, team performance, decision making, delegation, conflict, change and organisational priorities.
The aim is not simply to create somebody who understands leadership theory. It is to develop somebody who can use that knowledge more effectively inside the organisation.
A Management Problem Rarely Stays a Management Problem
When managers lack confidence, consistency or appropriate tools, the effects can quickly spread into employee performance, retention, culture, customer experience and wider organisational results.
“They were promoted because they were good at the job.”
Technical competence does not automatically create the communication, judgement and people skills required to lead others.
“Performance problems keep coming back.”
Managers may address the visible problem without establishing whether the cause is capability, expectations, workload, process, motivation or management itself.
“Difficult conversations are being avoided.”
Small issues can become significantly harder to resolve when managers lack confidence in challenging behaviour or addressing concerns early.
“Everything comes back to the manager.”
Weak delegation and unclear accountability can turn the manager into a bottleneck while preventing employees from developing greater responsibility.
“Good employees are leaving.”
Pay is not the only factor affecting retention. Day-to-day management, communication, progression and belonging can significantly influence employee experience.
“Our managers can run teams but struggle with change.”
Operational competence does not automatically prepare a manager to lead uncertainty, cultural change or wider organisational transformation.
Build Leadership Capability Around the Workplace
The suite progresses from leading people effectively through to diagnosing performance and ultimately leading strategy, change and organisational improvement.
Understand
Develop the management knowledge needed to understand people, behaviour and leadership responsibility.
Diagnose
Look beyond symptoms and establish what is actually affecting team or organisational performance.
Lead
Apply stronger communication, coaching, decision making, challenge and change leadership to genuine situations.
Improve
Turn development into practical actions that strengthen the manager, their team or the wider organisation.
Four Levels of Leadership Development
Choose the package that reflects the manager's existing experience and the responsibility they need to become more capable of handling. Employers can select an individual stage or develop the complete pathway from first-line management through to strategic leadership.
Leadership Foundations: From Managing Tasks to Leading People
For supervisors, new managers and employees who have gained responsibility for people without necessarily receiving formal preparation for leading them.
Management Intelligence: People, Performance & Better Decisions
For established managers who can run their team operationally but need stronger capability around performance, coaching, difficult conversations and management judgement.
Advanced Leadership: Strategy, Change & Organisational Performance
For experienced managers and senior leaders moving beyond their immediate team and becoming responsible for wider organisational performance and change.
Complete Leadership & Management Programme: From Manager to Strategic Leader
For employers wanting to build the complete capability from managing people effectively through performance leadership and into wider strategic responsibility.
Leadership Development Has Not Stopped Because Government Funding Has
For employers developing existing supervisors and managers, commercial training provides a focused route that can concentrate on the capability needed now rather than waiting for another government-funded leadership programme to emerge.
Focus on the actual skills gap
Choose the management-development level required rather than putting an experienced employee through areas they already perform confidently.
Develop capability sooner
Address the management challenge while it is current rather than allowing poor practice or low confidence to become embedded.
Apply it immediately
Managers can use their development against teams, performance issues and organisational priorities they are dealing with now.
No apprenticeship eligibility requirement
Select employees according to organisational development need rather than government apprenticeship funding eligibility.
No end-point assessment requirement
Commercial development can remain focused on capability, application and organisational improvement rather than preparation for a separate EPA.
Greater employer control
Choose the programme, level and employees that reflect the leadership capability the organisation actually needs.
Competitors Can Copy a Product. Strong Leadership Is Harder to Replicate.
Developing stronger managers can create an advantage that reaches far beyond the individual attending the programme. Leadership influences performance, retention, decision making, culture and the organisation's ability to respond when circumstances change.
Address problems earlier
Managers with stronger judgement and communication are better positioned to tackle concerns before they become larger performance or employee-relations issues.
Retain organisational knowledge
Better management and development conversations can help capable employees see progression and opportunity within the organisation.
Build accountability
Clear expectations, delegation and follow-through reduce dependency on individual managers and strengthen team ownership.
Respond to change faster
Strong managers translate organisational change into meaningful action for the people expected to deliver it.
Develop future leaders internally
Leadership capability creates a stronger succession pipeline and reduces the need to recruit externally every time responsibility increases.
Strengthen culture through behaviour
Organisational values become meaningful when managers demonstrate them consistently through everyday decisions, conversations and treatment of people.
Research-Led Leadership Development With Real Workplace Application
Leadership models can be useful, but managers need more than a collection of theories.
Qualia's programmes use established leadership and management frameworks alongside research, organisational behaviour, contemporary workplace challenges and critical application.
Managers are encouraged to understand why an approach may work, what assumptions sit behind it and when organisational context requires a different response.
This creates development designed for managers working with real people and complex organisations rather than simply learning definitions for an assessment.
Develop the Manager Around What They Are Actually Responsible For
Depending on the programme selected, workplace application can focus on the manager's current team, performance challenges or a wider organisational priority.
- Clarifying expectations and accountability.
- Improving one-to-one and performance conversations.
- Strengthening delegation.
- Developing employees through coaching.
- Addressing difficult situations earlier.
- Understanding team-performance evidence.
- Reviewing culture and inclusion.
- Leading organisational change.
- Improving decision-making processes.
- Developing strategic leadership capability.
Commercial Leadership & Management Training for Northern Employers
Based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Qualia Academy provides commercial leadership and management training for employers across Yorkshire and the North West.
The programmes support organisations developing supervisors, first-line managers, established operational managers and senior leaders who need stronger capability in people management, performance, strategy and organisational change.
With government funding for new starts on key leadership apprenticeships now withdrawn, the commercial pathway gives employers a direct route to continue developing the managers their organisation needs.
Commercial Leadership Development for Employers
Have government-funded leadership apprenticeships stopped?
Government funding for new starts ended from 1 September 2026 for the Team Leader Level 3, Operations Manager Level 5 and Chartered Manager Degree Level 6 apprenticeship standards. Existing apprentices who started before that date can continue through their programme.
What can employers use instead?
Employers can fund leadership and management development commercially, allowing them to select the level, duration and content most relevant to their managers and organisational priorities.
Why choose commercial leadership training rather than an apprenticeship?
Commercial development can be particularly useful for existing managers who need focused upskilling rather than a complete occupational apprenticeship. It can concentrate on the identified skills gap, be applied immediately and does not require apprenticeship funding eligibility or an end-point assessment.
Is this suitable for existing managers?
Yes. The suite has different development levels for supervisors, new managers, established managers and more experienced leaders taking wider organisational responsibility.
Do managers need to complete all four packages?
No. Packages 1, 2 and 3 can be selected independently. Package 4 combines the complete 13-day pathway from people management through to strategic leadership.
Can managers work on genuine organisational issues?
Yes. The consultancy-style approach is designed to connect development to genuine teams, performance concerns, management situations and wider organisational priorities.
