Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects millions of people worldwide, making it difficult for them to breathe properly through asthma attacks. World Asthma Day, observed every year on the first Tuesday of May, serves as an important event to raise awareness about asthma, educate people on the significance of asthma management, and emphasise the importance of fostering inclusive environments for individuals with asthma, particularly in the workplace.

In this blog, we’ll explore what World Asthma Day is, the importance of being educated on asthma, particularly in the workplace, and how individuals and organisations can work together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for those with asthma. Additionally, we’ll look at how Qualia Academy supports businesses through management training that equips managers and leaders with the tools needed to support employees with health conditions like asthma.

What is World Asthma Day?

World Asthma Day was initiated by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to raise awareness about asthma and improve the care and treatment of individuals living with the condition. The event aims to highlight the global impact of asthma and the steps that can be taken to ensure better care and management for people suffering from this condition.

Each year, World Asthma Day brings attention to a different theme to highlight various aspects of asthma care. The goal is to spread knowledge about the importance of asthma management, treatment options, and the need for public policies that promote better air quality and access to healthcare services.

Asthma is a significant health issue worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 300 million people suffer from asthma globally, and it is responsible for more than 250,000 deaths each year. The prevalence of asthma is rising, and it’s essential to understand its impact and take action to support those affected.

The Importance of Being Educated on Asthma

Education is a powerful tool in managing asthma effectively. Both individuals living with asthma and those around them must be educated on the condition to prevent complications and provide timely help during an asthma attack. This is especially crucial in workplaces, where individuals may spend a significant portion of their day.

Workplaces often have employees with various health conditions, including asthma, and it is crucial for colleagues and managers to be informed about these health conditions to create a supportive work environment. With proper education, individuals with asthma can manage their condition effectively, while others can step in during emergencies to provide assistance.

Understanding asthma and its triggers is an essential first step. Asthma symptoms can include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. These symptoms may worsen in certain environments or during physical activities. Common triggers include allergens such as pollen, dust, or mold, smoke, cold air, strong odours, and even stress. When individuals are educated about these triggers, they can better manage their environment and prevent asthma flare-ups.

Furthermore, it’s important for employers and managers to understand the asthma importance in relation to workplace health and productivity. By promoting awareness and educating employees, workplaces can reduce the frequency of asthma attacks and ensure a healthier, more productive work environment for all.

What to Do if Someone Is Having an Asthma Attack

An asthma attack can be a frightening experience for both the individual affected and those around them. However, understanding how to respond quickly and effectively can save lives and prevent serious complications. It’s essential to have an action plan in place, particularly in workplaces where asthma attacks may occur.

If someone is having an asthma attack, the following steps should be taken:

Stay Calm: Both the person experiencing the asthma attack and those around them should remain calm. Panic can make the situation worse.

Assist the Individual in Using Their Inhaler: Most people with asthma carry a rescue inhaler (such as Salbutamol) that can help open up the airways during an asthma attack. If the person does not have their inhaler or cannot use it, seek medical help immediately.

Encourage Controlled Breathing: Help the person focus on slow, controlled breathing. Instruct them to breathe in deeply through their nose and exhale slowly through their mouth.

Call for Medical Help: If the symptoms do not improve after using the inhaler, or if the person is struggling to breathe, seek medical attention immediately. An asthma attack can become life-threatening if not managed promptly.

Monitor the Individual: Stay with the individual until help arrives or until their breathing improves. Continue to reassure them and assist as needed.

In the workplace, having a clear plan for handling medical emergencies such as asthma attacks is vital. Employees should know the location of first-aid kits and any emergency medications (like inhalers), and managers should be trained to assist in these situations. By fostering a well-informed environment, the impact of asthma attacks can be minimised, and individuals will feel safer knowing they have the support of their colleagues and leaders.

How Workplaces Can Be Inclusive to Individuals with Asthma

Creating an inclusive workplace for individuals with asthma is crucial for fostering a culture of health and support. Employers and employees can work together to ensure that asthma doesn’t become a barrier to a productive and fulfilling work life. Here are some strategies that workplaces can implement to support employees with asthma:

Flexible Work Environment: Employees with asthma may have specific needs regarding their work environment. For example, they may need to avoid areas with strong odours or heavy dust. Providing flexible workspace options or offering remote work opportunities can help accommodate these needs.

Promote Clean Air: Clean air is crucial for individuals with asthma. Employers can invest in air purifiers or ensure that the workplace is properly ventilated. Reducing exposure to pollutants and allergens can significantly reduce the likelihood of asthma attacks.

Encourage Open Communication: Encourage employees to communicate openly about their asthma and any accommodations they may need. Fostering an atmosphere of trust and support allows individuals to feel comfortable asking for assistance when needed.

Provide Training: All employees, especially managers, should undergo training on asthma and its importance. Educating staff on the symptoms, triggers, and emergency procedures can help ensure that everyone knows how to respond appropriately if an asthma attack occurs.

Offer Health and Wellness Programs: Workplace wellness programs that promote physical and mental health can benefit employees with asthma. Activities such as stress-reducing exercises, wellness challenges, and providing access to healthcare resources can contribute to overall well-being.

Inclusive Policies: Employers should develop and enforce policies that protect individuals with asthma. These policies could include ensuring access to necessary medications, providing time off for medical appointments, and preventing exposure to asthma triggers in the workplace.

How Individuals with Asthma Can Benefit Themselves

While workplaces play a significant role in supporting employees with asthma, individuals with asthma also have a responsibility to manage their condition and take steps to improve their health. Here are some ways individuals with asthma can benefit themselves:

Follow a Treatment Plan: Working closely with a healthcare provider to develop a personalised asthma action plan is crucial. This plan will include medication schedules, emergency procedures, and lifestyle changes to reduce asthma flare-ups.

Monitor Symptoms: Keeping track of asthma symptoms, such as frequency of attacks, triggers, and medication use, can help individuals better manage their condition. Using an asthma diary or smartphone app can help with this tracking.

Avoid Triggers: Identifying and avoiding triggers, such as allergens, smoke, or cold air, is essential in preventing asthma attacks. Taking measures to reduce exposure to these triggers can significantly improve an individual’s quality of life.

Exercise Regularly: Regular physical activity can improve lung function and reduce asthma symptoms. However, individuals should consult with their healthcare provider to determine safe exercises and avoid overexertion.

Maintain a Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can boost immune function and improve overall health, which can be beneficial for individuals with asthma.
